Interdisciplinary courses on research data management in cooperation with the Graduate School

The Research Data Management (RDM) course, which has been steadily expanded since 2018, is now being replaced by a new modular course offer.

From April 2025, you will be able to compose your individual RDM course from thematically different modules. The individual modules are designed in a way that they can be attended independently from each other. As before, they will be offered regularly in the summer semester (in German) and in the winter semester (in English). You can therefore also attend the courses spread over several semesters. The modules are free of charge for all members of the University of Bayreuth Graduate School (UBTGS) and the WiN-Academy. For registration details, please visit the pages of the WiN-UBT Service Center (Workshops und Events).

Note from the WiN-UBT Service Center: Workshops from the RDM area can only be credited for the kick-off seminar or within the WiN certificate if a total of at least 4 hours have been completed. The composition of the RDM modules is freely selectable.

Introduction to RDM, FAIR & CAREHide

This one-hour course starts at the very beginning of a project idea and provides an introduction to research data management. We will explore the following questions with you: What is research data management anyway? Why is good research data management so important for my research project? What exactly are research data? What is ‘fair’ data? What are the FAIR and CARE principles? What do the various funding organisations expect when dealing with research data? What does the University of Bayreuth expect from you when handling research data?

Responsible: Research Support Office, IT Service Centre
Duration: 60 min

Documentation and MetadataHide

During the project, a well thought-out directory structure and consistent naming of files facilitate both your own work and collaboration within the team. Well-documented data promotes the traceability and reuse of research data and supports the FAIR publication of research data in a repository or data journal. This course is aimed at anyone interested in gaining an initial overview of the topics of data organisation and metadata in order to manage their (research) data in a structured and comprehensible manner.

Responsible: University Library
Duration: 60 min

Data Publishing and Data Re-usingHide

Publishing the research data generated in the project contributes to the traceability, transparency and reusability of the research results. It is increasingly expected by research funders, provided there are no important reasons against it. This course is aimed at anyone interested in getting a short overview of the possibilities of publishing research data, how repositories can support the FAIR publication of research data and what should be considered when publishing research data.

Responsible: University Library
Duration: 90 min

IT Tools for RDM at UBTHide

This course offers a comprehensive introduction to the applications available centrally within the University of Bayreuth. Anyone interested in acquiring a preliminary understanding of the functionalities and potential utilisation scenarios of our digital services is invited to attend. The course will cover the structure and content of data management plans and their creation in RDMO@UBT, the possibilities of research documentation in the electronic lab notebook SciNote@UBT, the storage and possibility of publishing research data in the institutional repository RDSpace@UBT and the presentation and publication of collections in Collections@UBT.

Responsible: IT Service Centre
Duration: 60 min

Long-term availability of dataHide

The long-term digital availability of research data is an important aspect of research data management that can extend over the different phases of the data lifecycle. This course provides a general overview of the topic of long-term availability of data. In addition to the various components that should be considered for long-term availability, the characteristics of sustainable, long-term capable file formats are explained and possible criteria for the selection of research data for long-term availability are presented. The course is aimed at anyone interested in creating the best possible conditions for the long-term availability of their research data right from the start of their research work.

Responsible: University Library
Duration: 30 min
